A new initiative run by the Eden Project, The Big Lunch encourages communities to come together through growing food and flowers; creating street music, art and theatre; dressing the street and, of course, cooking and eating together. The day after the Big Lunch, people will walk down their street and know someone in most windows. However, the legacy of The Big Lunch is much bigger than just the day after... The aim is to give people the tools to strengthen their communities through activities such as neighbourhood-watch; improving local amenities such as youth centres; taking care of the elderly or disabled; making imaginative improvements to the local environment; sharing resources from lawnmowers to cars; and supporting local charities both with money and volunteering time. More » Organising a Big Lunch in your area is really easy. Available from April, The Big Lunch website and printed Ideas Booklet will take you through the process step by step, giving you the tools, templates and resources to make it as simple as possible. You’ll find inspirational ideas and top tips from our ambassadors on the website and you can find others planning a Big Lunch in your street or area by simply entering your post-code on our Big Lunch map. Tue, 01 Jul 2008 15:14 Parish newsletter - july Weddings Happy occasions for John and Pene Oakland, married at The Oaks; Les and Gill Cook, also married at the Oaks and believed to be the oldest couple to be married in the church (they don’t mind that being public knowledge!); and Richard and Charlotte (Charlie) Froggatt who were also married recently. Mount St Bernard Abbey On 8th March Brother Lawrence, Guestmaster, was ordained priest in a most colourful and joyous ceremony. There was a large, mainly African congregation who sang, danced and clapped their way through the ceremony and the reception afterwards in the garden in great contrast to the traditional Cistercian solemnity of such occasions. More » Less than three weeks later there was solemnity and sadness for the funeral of Brother Peter Odlum on 27th March. Brother Peter had been one of the early participants in the abbey’s Bamenda foundation in Cameroon and more lately community gardener at Mount St. Bernard providing fruit and vegetables for many years. He had been frail but his death was unexpected. General The Parish notice board was demolished in a traffic accident but amazingly the driver incurred no serious injury despite needing to be cut from the wreckage of the car. Insurance has provided for a new notice board which should be in place by the time this is circulated. Senior Citizens should have been advised about transport facilities using either a free bus pass or the provision of taxi tokens for those who do not have access to a bus route. The cash value of the taxi tokens is on the whole insufficient as they provide only three single journeys into Loughborough for example, but we would urge those eligible to apply for and use the tokens so that a demand is established and that the need for a higher value can be argued. Planning applications for this area can now be viewed on line at www.nwleics.gov.uk Bulky Household Waste. Arrangements can be made for collection of bulky household waste by telephoning the Recycling Hotline on 01530 454572 where specific information can also be given. Up to 6 items can be collected at a cost of £15 for the first 3 and £5 per additional item up to a maximum of 6. Further information can be obtained from the North West Leicestershire web site. Philip Bell-Young of Abbey Road is due to go to Honduras in July on a scientific expedition organised by Operation Wallecea, an international conservation organisation active in six less economically developed countries (Indonesia, Honduras, Egypt, South Africa, Cuba and Peru). This expedition places young people with a team of scientists to advise the local government about the preservation of the rain forest and also to record the quantity and viability of local species of wildlife. Philip will spend one week in the rain forest and another week scuba diving to search and record marine life. He is one of twenty students chosen by Hind Leys Community College for this project because of his excellent progress in the sciences. In addition to school work and preparation for A levels, Philip had to work in a variety of ways to help raise the funds, about £2000, to enable him to take part in this exciting programme. Our congratulations to Philip on this achievement. Richard Froggatt of Charley Knoll is Senior technician at Apotex Scorpio Motorsport based in Swithland who run a team of four cars in the British Formula Renault Championship. So far this season, after three meetings, they gained 2nd, 7th and 10th places in the first of two races at the wet meeting at Brands Hatch but in the second race, only 8th and a 10th places. The next event at Rockingham was not much better as the best was 7th in the first race and 10th in the second with two non finishers. The third event was at Donington Park. Unfortunately due to relatively poor qualifying, the best was 8th, 11th and 13th plus one non finisher. These results are from a grid of over 25 cars. Richard also prepares and runs a single car in the British Automobile Racing Club’s own Renault championship using last year’s cars and so far Ollie Hancock in the car prepared by Richard, has gained a 1st and 6th at Brands Hatch on a day it was snowing; then at a wet Rockingham they came away with two wins. Now much work is going on to improve the teams’ results as the season progresses. The Froggatt family took part in the Charnwood Caper road run to Belvoir Castle which is organised by the North Leicester MG Car Club and sponsored by Luffield cars. This is a non-competitive event in some of the most picturesque country roads in Leicestershire and Rutland. The Froggatts had a successful day at MG Silverstone. Richard’s brother-in-law gained a class first, Charlotte took the Ladies Award and Richard and Mike each gained a Second in Class. Then the entire Froggatt family plus Richard’s brother in law took part in a round of the MG Car Club’s sprint and hill climb championship which is also sponsored by Luffield Cars at Silverstone on the 15th June during the MG Car Club’s Silverstone International meetings from the 13th to 15th June. The Froggatt family have a collection of no less than 10 MG’s of various types although some are not running at this time. Our thanks for these contributions from individual residents. The accounts for Charley Parish can be viewed on 28th, 30th and 31st July between 4 and 7 p.m. by telephoning the Clerk, Mr. Brian Duncombe on 01530 831383 Dates of Meetings: Charley Parish Council. « Less Thu, 01 Mar 2007 14:18 Parish Newsletter Displaying results 1-15 of 18
